Bryan Sounds like your first encounter with Chinese rubber. This is a universal problem with most all products from China that contain rubber. It is not a problem for me because I store the shoes in the garage with the bike. The smell will reduce in time (but not in days) if left open to the air.

Bryan I can't answer the question you asked. The specs do say it measures up to 5000ppm. While that is really high it's not particularly dangerous, unless making you drowsy and uncomfortable is considered dangerous.
