Q: It works like a IP device using WiFi connecting to router, no need for smart hub?

Evert Yes it's a wifi device. No need for brdiges etc.

Evert This module is not equipped with the 2 transistors for automatic programming mode or also named "reset method dtr" To program it with PlatformIO (or Arduino) you have to hold the boot button down, press the EN button and release the boot button. The module is now in flash mode and can be programmed.
