I started with a base A979 and upgraded to the 540 motor, so naturally I ended up stripping almost all of the gears at one point or another. Upgrading to the metal diff gear means I don't have to worry as much about hard launches, especially after locking the rear diff. To lock the diff, use a dremel with a cutting wheel to slot the metal diff cups, then cut a rectangular piece of rigid steel sheet/plate such that it fits into the diff housing and wedges against the side extrusions, where the screws go (call it a "screw boss"). Orient the plate clockwise relative to the screw bosses to provide greater torque resistance during forward motion. Attach the gear, then slide the slotted cups into the diff and lock them into the plate. Reassemble. Now you can launch as hard as you want. :-) P.S. For greater peace of mind, test fit diff mods, then remove the cups/gear and fill housing with epoxy. Reassemble and allow to cure. This diff will be indestructible!

This is a very hard hight quality gear!, it fits the plastic housing perfectly and it runs very straight,, no wobble to be found :-) still not able to test them yet as my center shaft is crooked so soon I have a new one of those and can test the little car :-)
